Must Have Safety Items For Your Home

Today, safety is one of the biggest concerns for homeowners. You can never be too safe when it comes to your home and family. Man-made or natural disasters can occur at any time, and being prepared reduces stress and increases survival. It is essential to plan and make sure you and your family are safe in case something happens. For this reason, we have come up with this pro homeowner tips list of some of the must-have safety items for your home.

Pro Homeowner Tips: Must Have Home Safety Items

Fire Extinguishers – Fire extinguishers come in different sizes and can be mounted on a wall or in a cabinet for easy access. There should be at least one on each floor and one near the kitchen. There are different types of fire extinguishers. All fire extinguishers in the home should have a fire class rating of ABC. The ABC rating means the extinguisher can be used on the three most common home fire types:

  • A – Combustibles – Wood, paper, plastics, cloth, rubber
  • B – Flammable Liquids – grease, oil, paint, gas
  • C – Electrical – Wiring, switches, motors

Smoke Detectors – Fires can occur during the day or night, and an early warning can mean the difference between life and death. Have a smoke detector installed on every floor and outside of every bedroom in your home. Test your smoke detectors every few months and replace or charge the batteries at least once a year.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors – Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, colorless, and tasteless gas that can be deadly if inhaled. Have a carbon monoxide detector installed outside of every bedroom in the house. Make sure you test the detectors every few months and charge the batteries once a year.

Emergency Contact List – Keep an updated list of poison control, local police station, fire department, primary care doctors, and veterinarian (if you have a pet). Ensure all family members know where the list is located in case of an emergency.

First Aid Kit – Accidents happen, and a first aid kit is essential for all homes. The first aid kit should contain bandages, sterile gloves, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers, alcohol-free cleansing wipes, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, and an antiseptic solution.

Home Security System – A security system deters burglars and thieves from breaking into your house. Connect the system to a monitoring service. You can add door and window sensors as well as cameras and motion detectors. Set your alarm regularly to make sure it works in an emergency.

Flashlights – Flashlights should be stored on every floor of your home in a place where you can get to them quickly during severe weather or power outage. Have some extra batteries on hand and keep them together with the flashlights. Have some rechargeable or solar-powered flashlights on hand.

Family Disaster Kit – No one can predict an emergency. In such cases, it is good to have a kit packed up with essential supplies such as non-perishable foods, cash, water, tools, flashlights, battery-operated NOAA alert radio, and the first-aid kit. Keep the kit safe in a place where everyone in the house has access.
